I really expected more versatility out of this book with the title. I suggest reviewing it in person before purchase, to see if this is what you’re looking for. The color combinations I found to be very muted.

How color affects space and existing conditions!, May 13, 2005

I love how this book shows how different colors can change a layout without having to change major items (i.e. your furniture). They say paint is the cheapest way to change a room and this book shows how. It definantely pays for itself, trust me. I had a darker colored room and flipped through this book and saw all the possibilities for making it a warmer more spacious place. I chose an orange-peach color (close to one of the colors I saw in the book) and I got a whole new room! It feels much more like home. I’m so glad I found this book, otherwise I may have never been bold enough to paint it that color. Excellent buy, well worth the price, it’s a steal!!!

Interesting to flip through, but not very useful, March 8, 2007

This is a fun book. Kind of like the flip books where you make funny cartoon characters. But this is colors for walls, ceilings, and floors.

It’s neat to see how different a room (same furniture) looks with pink walls and yellow ceiling as opposed to blue walls, green ceiling.

But while it’s kind of neat to play with, I don’t see how it is very useful. There are sections for living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Each section has two different rooms – one more country-style decorated, the other a little more modern.

The furniture pieces in the living rooms and bedrooms are very neutral. Both bedrooms and both living rooms however feature light colored furniture, I would have prefered one option to show darker woods since that is mainly what I have in my house.

The floor color choices are not that great either. Not enough neutrals for the floor choices, since most people would be working with what they already have on the floor, and…

Homeschooling Help, April 26, 2000

If you homeschool, this collection of lists will take you from K-6 and is a great companion to any curriculum you use. Highlights for me were the phonics example words (perfect spelling lists), story starters and enrichment activities, as well as the greek and latin root words and the lists of suffixes and prefixes. There is so much useful information here, even your children will pick it up and browse through for fun.

A must for every elementary school teacher. Great resource!, October 23, 1999

During my 18 years of teaching, (everything from Developmental Kindergarten to Freshman Remedial English), this was the most valuable resource book I had. I was able to use this book in any grade level I taught. Great resource book. A must for your collection!!!

While I’ve worked a bit with other components of the Adobe Creative Suite, I was an absolute beginner when it comes to Illustrator, and really needed a simple guide to become familiar with the interface, tools and basic strategies. The Illustrator is a complicated program but this book does a good job of explaining various features through lessons. While following the instructions in the book, I realized how difficult it is for them to describe every step precisely and clearly, in part because the book has to address both PC and Mac users and the program menus and tool settings change depending on the screen resolution of the user computer. For example, the book asks the reader to click the word Transform but some readers may not see the Transform in the described panel because of their limited screen resolution. So the book describes another way of selecting the Transform. In addition, the Illustrator is highly customizable, so the book reminds the reader to start with the default settings, not just once but over and over again. So the book tries hard not to lose the reader in the lessons by anticipating possible situations the reader may face.

Illustrator is Adobe’s oldest app, going back to 1987. What’s called “Illustrator CS5″ is actually Illustrator 15. In September of 2003, when Adobe released its original Creative Suite collection, Illustrator shared a common user interface (UI) with Photoshop and InDesign. Though many of the tools and panels in many of the CS5 apps look and operate similarly, each app has it’s own hidden power. It seems to us that there’s more power hiding in Adobe Illustrator (Ai) than any other app in the Master Collection. We go back to Illustrator 3 but need to brush up with the new features with each version which is released. We have many resources for getting up to speed but none is better than Classroom in a Book (CIB). I love this book., June 17, 2000

Beginning with "The first six words I’ll teach my pup are ‘dig a hole’ and ‘fill it up.’" this book is absolutely hilarious. I had never heard of it before my son came along, but it is one of his favorites and mine. It is whimiscal, clever, and just plain fun: "have a care, don’t paint the mayor." The cadence and flow of the words are masterful.

This nugget will surprise you. I hope you enjoy it.

Better than Dr. Seuss, October 31, 2007

My two sons and I love this book! Along with ‘Are You My Mother?’, ‘The Best Nest’, ‘Go, Dog, Go!’, and ‘Snow’, it is a favorite from my childhood that my sons now read (we had to buy a new one, as my original copy finally fell apart.) For children who are learning to read, these books make much more sense than some of the Dr. Seuss books which can be filled with nonsense words. ‘I’ll Teach My Dog 100 Words’ is a special favorite, as it helped my 5-year-old learn many new sight words AND count to 100. Not recommended for bedtime reading, as it can cause uncontrollable giggles; not the best way to settle them down for sleep.

Mystery, suspense, horror, oh my!, April 3, 2002

The third installation of Darren Shan’s Cirque du Freak series takes us to an unnamed city plagued by an elusive killer. Darren and his mentor, Larten Crepsley, are paid a visit from an old friend of Mr. Crepsley’s named Gavner Purl, a Vampire General. After a clandestine conversation with Gavner, Mr. Crepsley announces that he must leave the Cirque for a while and go live in the city, and Darren as his assistant has to go with him. Dismayed at the idea of having to be alone all the time in a strange place, Darren convinces his best friend Evra Von to join him.

Yet another great book by Mr. Shan, September 20, 2002

This book continues the nonstop action that is in the Saga of Darren Shan. When a mad vampaneze runs loose in Mr. Crepsley’s hometown, Darren, the snakeboy, Evra Von, and Mr. Crepsley must journey there to stop him. Mr. Crepsley goes out every night to investigate. Darren and Evra become suspicious when they hear of several bodies that were found DRAINED OF BLOOD!!! (They do not yet know of the mad vampaneze.) Darren and Evra start following Mr. Crepsley. In a butcher’s shop, Darren comes face to face with the mysterious vampire’s cousin. In another heartpounding adventure, Darren once again delivers a brilliant book. Highly recommended.

“Tunnels of Blood,” the third volume in Darren Shan’s “Cirque Du Freak” series, is buy far the best so far. In this volume, we learn lots more about vampires and one of their greatest enemies, and also a bit of history. Like all the “Cirque Du Freak” books, this one ends with the dreadful last three words (as all the books would I predict) TO BE CONTINUED, and the fourth book is not coming out till September!!!!! The publisher has got to get with it and start publishing more than two books in this series a year!!! People in the U.K. are soon to get the SIXTH book in the series. A great read!!!

I LOVE this book!, February 23, 2007

I really enjoyed this book and was anxious to read the next in the series. As a teenager I highly recommend this book for all age groups. The author did a good job of portraying the bible in a medieval setting which made for exciting reading. This book goes goes from creation through captivity under the Pharoah which in this book is named Fairos. Great book! Highly recommend and I am so excited to see that the author has written more for a total of 6 in this series as of May 2007!

Biblical Allegory: In the Beginning, July 14, 2007

The tale of the Bible translated into a medieval Celtic kingdom is the basis for the Kingdom Series. “Kingdom’s Dawn”, the first in the series, follows Leinad, a young man who typifies many of the early Old Testament characters. Sometimes the allegory seems a little too strained, and Chuck Black does not have the most flowing style, but he certainly has come up with a captivating allegory. Leinad uses his sword, representing the Word, to fight for the King. At one point his people are enslaved in a land, and the allegory is very obvious, as the king who finally lets them go is named “Lord Fairos”. There are other like situations that are made very plain in case anyone might have forgotten what the series really is about. As in Bunyan’s “Holy War” – which is the best Biblical allegory I have ever read – the same people represent more than one Biblical character or image, so as to have a cohesive story that does not expand over thousands of years. On the back of the book it says it is supposed to be for teenagers. I enjoy a lot of ‘young adult’ fiction, so bought this book. Frankly, it’s written more for pre-teens, maybe 8- to 12-year-olds. The language and writing is very simplistic for teenagers. I do think a pre-teen could really enjoy it, though.

I think I would have given this book at least 4 stars if it wasn’t trying so hard to be an allegory. In an allegory of the Bible, usually one person, event, or idea in the book represents one person, event, or idea in the Bible. Here, a sword can be a real sword used in a real battle or representing a spiritual battle with the Word of God. His two main characters, Leinad and Tess, represent multiple people in many different events covering all of the Old Testament (from Seth to Moses in this book). He also is too loose (or not loose enough) in this allegory. For example, his retelling of the Biblical Flood is: our heroes are warned of a bunch of sea creatures…

Amazing! Neat technique! Beautiful projects! Buy it!!!!, September 6, 2001

This is the first "stack n whack" book that I’ve purchased. I bought it because of the butterfly quilt pattern, but there are many other projects that will catch your eye and send you running to the fabric store! The basic principle of this technique is to utilize the repetition of patterns within fabric in a consistent way to create "kaleidoscopic" effects in your quilt design. It does take a little careful reading to understand the technique, and how the "dynamics" of the fabric will matter to the design, but the book has very good directions, and great photos.

All in all there are 12 designs which demonstrate 3 different techniques:
1 – Stack n Whack, which is the "simplest" form
2 – Mirror image magic, which relies on using both the right and wrong side of the fabric for a different effect
3 – Stack n select, a more selective method of cutting to provide more control to the end design.

Not for beginners, February 1, 2002

The projects in this book are very well documented as to
how to pick out fabric and how to cut it to get the
dramatic effects for these projects. Very clear directions
with lots of pictures to guide you in assembly. You must
have a basic quilting knowledge and be willing to put in
the extra time to turn out these quality projects.
A beautiful book for someone who wants beautiful projects
that are a little more challenging.

Another Wonderful Book, September 24, 2001

This book continues with Bethany’s wonderful methods of transforming fabric into great kaleidoscopic blocks. The directions are extremely well written for use, even by people who have never done Stack&Whack quilt blocks before.

I love the new shapes that Bethany is using, since I can use smaller amounts of my fabrics with some of the easier shapes.

I’ll be amazing my friends soon with some more wonderful quilts from these patterns!!

There are different books on the market that list only works of fiction. A wonderful source to the best in wholesome children’s books, September 16, 1999

This book is arranged by subject and reading level. There is a good variety of choices, and the books listed have all been evaluated to be wholesome and reinforce proper priorities, human relationships and good attitudes. There are wonderful classic books and newer books also. My child has enjoyed every title we have read from the booklists.

great resource for children’s books, March 8, 2007

I’m a homeschool mom of 4 with a degree in English, but sometimes I need help and guidance when selecting books for my children, particularly nonfiction. I love Charlotte Mason’s idea of living books, books that are not textbooks and that are well-written and appealing to children without being “twaddle.” This is an excellent resource for any parent, teacher, or children’s librarian. My children have loved the books we’ve chosen from the library that were suggested by Wilson. I’d highly recommend it!

Kumon’s MY FIRST BOOK OF MAZES is a wonderful introduction to mazes for children. They recommend this book for a child aged 3-4-5…well, I would find it hard to believe a 3 yr. old could do some of these mazes! My son is 8 and he had lots of fun with this book. Some were very easy, but some were challenging. Note the cover art is nothing like the inner art. The inner art is beautifully done, with the even page mazes up to page 28 being softly colored 3-D looking mazes of city streets, a forest, a farm a zoo, a garden, a racetrack, etc. The odd numbered pages have mazes in black and white and are flat, in various creative designs, and are more challenging than the 3-D style mazes. Mazes #29 on are of animals: work your way through a soccer playing fox, a doggie waiter, a pig out shopping, a lion king…very fun! The animals are done in black and white with colorful backrounds. My 3 year old LOVED this book!, October 11, 2006

We have many of the Kumon workbooks and love them all, but this one is my son’s favorite. It’s perfect for 3 year olds. It starts with very simple mazes and then each progressive maze gets a little bit harder. When we first got the book and I looked towards the end of this book, I thought there was NO way my son could do this at three years old. . .but the book gradually increases the difficulty level so slowly that it WORKS! This is the one workbook that my son BEGGED to do and would do three or four pages at a sitting! And now he’s on the next “Amazing Mazes” book in the series.

This book is pegged for children ages 3 – 5, and that seems about right. My three year old son had a blast working these delightful (and sometimes challenging) mazes. There are 80 mazes in the book, and there is a certificate of achievement at the back of the book.

Highly recommended.
